How to Install a 2D Wired Barcode Scanner

Purpose:
To ensure correct installation and use of a wired 2D barcode scanner (handheld or countertop).

Prerequisites:

• 2D scanner device

• USB or Serial cable (usually USB)

• POS system powered on

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Unpack the Scanner:
   Remove from box and inspect. Retain user manual and programming barcode sheet.

2. Connect the Cable:
   Plug the USB end into the POS terminal or hub. Most 2D scanners are plug-and-play.

3. Wait for Device Recognition:
   Allow a few seconds for system to recognise the device as a HID (keyboard input).

4. Perform a Test Scan:
   Open a text editor (e.g., Notepad). Scan a product barcode. Verify that the code appears.

5. Optional Configuration:

   • Use the barcode sheet to program scanner modes (e.g. continuous scan, beep off, prefix/suffix)

   • Save settings by scanning the "Save" barcode on the sheet

6. POS Integration Check:
   Ensure barcode field in POS software is active and compatible with 2D scanner output format.
